Manuel Álvarez emigrated to Puerto Rico and after being successful in his business, he returned to his native village when he was 29. There, he took an active part in the social, cultural and political movement of that time.
He wrote several plays (¡Mientras haya flores!, La tertulia de Rolán, Siempre huérfana, etc.) and articles in prose (El Tecla, etc.). He also collaborated in several publications (Heraldo Guardés, Vida Gallega, La Integridad, Nuevo Heraldo, La Revista de las Antillas...) and took part in the creation of the associations 'Recreo Artístico Guardés' and 'Sociedad Pro-Monte de Santa Tecla'.
He was Mayor of A Guarda on two occasions. In 1982, he was dedicated an Avenue that was called 'Alcalde Manuel Álvarez'.
