He took a degree and a doctor's degree in Law (Roman Law) at Santiago de Compostela University. He filled the following offices: vice-dean in the Faculty of Law at Santiago University (1983-86), general secretary of Santiago University (1986-89), vice-president of the staff of Santiago University (1984-86), vice-president of the staff of Vigo University (1990-94), juridical adviser of Vigo University (1990-93) and dean in the Faculty of Law at Vigo University (1990-2000). He edited the magazine 'Lingua e Dereito' (Vigo University) and was on the governing body of the Galician School of Public Administration (1990-96). He is a member of the Societé D'historie Jean Bodin (Brussels, 1986), the Societé International des Droits de la Antiguité (Brussels, 1981), the Spanish Association for the Study on Roman Law (Madrid, 1984) and the International Association of Galician Studies (Oxford, 1996).

He has been a member of the Spanish Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation since 1996 and the Galician Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation since 1999. He has also been the vice-president of the Galician Arbitration Court since 1994. In 1998, he got 'Lois Peña Novo' Prize for his contribution to linguistic normalisation in Law and 'Manuel Colmeiro' Research Prize. He was the president of the fourth edition of the Latin American Conference on Roman Law in 1988. He was a visitor Professor at the following Universities: Leeds (United Kingdom), Paris XII and Le Mans (France), 'Lateranense' University in Rome (Italy), Trier (Germany), Bergen (Norway), 'Interamericana' (Puerto Rico) and El Salvador and Catholic University (Argentina).
