Carmen Pura was brought up in A Coruña until she was seven. It was then that she came back to Ourense again. She studied Primary Education, Secondary Education and Teaching in her native city. When she became a teacher, she worked in Ourense for three years and then in Segovia, Toledo, Seville and Madrid. Then she retired and when her husband died in 1985, she definitively returned to Ourense. In 1955, he travelled to Caracas (Venezuela) to organise and run a nursery school in Caracas. One year later, in 1956, she was called by the Central University to be the secretary of the Journalism School. She returned to Spain in 1968.
When she was still young (she was studying Secondary Education), she began to write and publish in Galician magazines and newspapers. She always combined Teaching with Literature. She published the following books in Galician: Íntimas (1952), Maturidade (1955), A saudade e outros poemas (1963), manuel (1971), Oriolos Nereiros (1974), Monicreques (1974), Ronseles (1980), Versos para os nenos da aldea (1968), Segundo Pereira (1978), Viaxe ao país dos contos e da poesía (1985), Antoloxía (1991), Verbas na edra do vento (1992), Zodíaco, Opúsculo (1992), Man que escribiu no mar (1993), Se digo Ourense (1994), Ardente identidade (1993), A carón de min (1994), A idade dos mansíos me dobrega (1995), Orballa en tempo lento (1995) and Desmemoriado río (1997). She also has the following unpublished works: Irmá Maior (1995), Terra matria dos soños (1996), Os Aldán foron a América (1996), Náufragos da Elexía (2001), Edras ao vento (2001), O mundo máxico das ideas (2001) and A morte rolda o mar (2002). In Spanish she published: Peregrino de amor (1943), Márgenes veladas (1944), En torno a la voz (1948), Madrugada fronda (1951), Tiempo mío (1952), Desde la niebla (1951), Columpio de luna a sol (1951), Mañana del amor (1956), Destinos (1955), Trece poemas a mi sombra, Rondas de norte a sur (1968), Los poetas (1971), Los sueños desandados (1974), Fantasías infantiles (1980), Contacto humano del recuero (1985), Presencia de Venezuela (1966), Antología (1990), Río de la Memoria (1997) and Herida soledad hacia lo alto (1998).
In 1992, she was dedicated the International Day of Working Women and one year later, in 1993, she was awarded the prize of feminine cultural creation, organised by the Xunta de Galicia. Pura Vázquez was awarded many other prizes and was paid many homages and honourable mentions.
