He studied at the Pontifical University of Comillas and was ordained as a priest in 1922. He took a degree in Canon Law and a doctor's degree in Philosophy and Theology. In 1927, he became a canon in Lugo and director of the Seminary. He edited the newspaper La Voz de la Verdad for a short period of time. He was the spiritual adviser at the Working Night School in Lugo during the Second Republic. His interest for culture, especially for architecture, made him be the president of the Provincial Commission of Monuments.
