He studied in Santiago de Compostela and at 'Santa Cruz' School in Valladolid. He was a canon in Compostela in 1645 and was nominated as royal preacher by King Felipe IV. In 1664, he was elected bishop of Valladolid, where he stayed for four years and then Salamanca, where he lived for ten years. In 1682, he was elected for the metropolitan of Santiago de Compostela. His main task in Compostela consisted of softening the strained relations between bishops and canons.
