He took a degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1962 and a doctor’s degree six years later. He specialised in Endocrinology and Nutrition at Complutense University (Madrid, 1969). He is also fellow of the Royal Infirmary (Edinburgh, Scotland, 1965-67), Neels Steenses (Copenhague, 1968-69) and the Medical Center (San Francisco, California, 1969-71). Since 1984, he has been a Professor of the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service at San Carlos University Hospital in Madrid (Faculty of Medicine, Complutense University).

 Work & Activities

He directed fifteen research projects and published 248 articles in scientific magazines (175 in Spanish magazines, 70 in foreign magazines and three in French magazines). He directed thirty-four doctoral theses and wrote thirty books and monographs. He also gave 281 lectures, twenty of them in foreign universities and presented two hundred conferences and symposia.

 Other Interesting Aspects

He was awarded ‘San Nicolás’ Prize of the Academy of Medicine (Madrid, 1962), ‘Padre Feijoo’ Biological Research Prize (Ourense, 1973) and ‘Lilly’ Endocrinology Research Prize (1996). He was the assistant director of the Nutrition Institute (Complutense University, Madrid, 1984-87), president and honourable member of the Spanish Endocrinology Society (1987), president of the National Commission on Endocrinology and Nutrition (1987-88), foundation member of the European Endrocrinology Society (1987), president of the Insalud-University Commission on Research (1990-95), president of the Endocrinology, Nutrition and Diabetes Society (Madrid, 1992-96), member of the Spanish Nutrition Foundation (1998) and member of the Commission responsible for the Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics. He has also coordinated the Nutrition group at the Spanish Endocrinology and Nutrition Society since 1994, the subject ‘Nutrition Pathology and Dietetics in the Faculty of Medicine (Complutense University) and the subject ‘Science and Food Technology: Nutrition in pathological processes’ in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Complutense University, Madrid) since 1995.
