After studying Secondary Education in Cádiz, he moved to Seville and then to Madrid, where he took a doctor's degree in Philosophy and Arts in 1948. One year later, in 1949, he became a Professor. He work first at Santiago de Compostela University, then in Valladolid and lately at 'Complutense' University (Madrid), where he was a Professor of History of Modern and Contemporary Art. He filled the offices of dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts (1967-1970) and vice-rector (1970-72).

In 1973, he became a member of 'San Fernando' Academy of Fine Arts. He participated in the section 'Aula Abierta' (a radio programme for students of the Open University) during the academic year 1976-77. In 1983, he directed the Artistic Inventory of Guadalajara and its province.
