Since he was still a child, he showed his vocation for music when his father began to teach him solfa and cornet. When he was only thirteen, he began to conduct the old Choral Society in Tui (Pontevedra) and shortly after, he entered the Regiment of Murcia in Vigo as a musician. When he was nineteen, he moved to Madrid and entered the Conservatory. After getting a prize in Composition, he travelled to France, Italy and Germany by means of a grant of the City Council of Vigo to improve his studies.
