He arrived in Santiago de Compostela in 1649. He was interested in carrying out several repairs in the cathedral, both in the chancel and the façade. He took these questions into account in his memory about the works in the cathedral.
Vega y Verdugo, who was known as 'Conde de Alba Real', was the great promoter of the Galician Baroque. In 1658, he was nominated as cathedral churchwarden and published the book Informe sobre la construcción de varias obras en la Catedral de Santiago de Compostela, which was considered the manifesto of Baroque art in Galicia. That same year he started works at the tabernacle. The project was entrusted to Francisco de Antas and Bernardo de Cabrera although other artists also collaborated later on.
