He took a degree in Economy at the University of Vigo and a three-year degree in Business Management at Caixanova Business School and at the University of Wales. He also did a MA In Business Management, specialising in management control, at Caixanova Business School.
Joaquín Varela is also an expert on audit (he is a member of the ROAC). From 1994 to May 2009 he has developed his professional activity at Pricewaterhouse Coopers as Audit Senior Manager. As a result of his experience as auditor, he has extense knowledge of the Galician business network, both the public and private sectors. He was the managing director of the IGAPE.
In the last five years (2004-2008), he collaborated as a Professor in the MA in Audit organized by the University of Vigo. From 2006 to 2008 he collaborated in the postgraduate course on Auditing, organized by the Associations of Economists of A Coruña. He also participated as an expert in meetings and courses to present the new Spanish General Accounting Plan.
At the proposal of the ‘conselleiro’ responsible for Economy and Industry, Javier Guerra, the board of directors of the Galician Institute of Economic Promotion (IGAPE) agreed to appoint Joaquín Varela director general of this institution.
