He studied Medicine in Santiago, taking his degree with an award. He entered the Corps of Military Heath and Doctors of the Army. He was appointed to Africa, where he was injured. Then he directed several hospitals in Galicia.
Under the pseudonym 'Andrés Valcárcel', he collaborated in the newspaper Vanguardia Gallega (Lugo), which was edited by his brother Juan Antonio.
He was awarded the Charity Cross for his attendance in the bubonic pest in Melilla.
