Fernando Cortizo

He started his career in the middle 90’s making a 8 mm short film (‘El monstruo de la playa’). During this decade, he made several short films (‘Blackcat spantat’, ‘Solo’, ‘O Boiro’, ‘El ladrón de muñecas’, ‘Bucowski’ and ‘Promesa’) and specialized in the stop-motion animation technique.

In 2007, he created his own production company “Artefacto producciones” and began to make animation films (“Leo”, “El cuidador de gatos”, “Noche de brujas”) that were awarded prizes all over Spain and abroad ('FiCIIQQ-Chile', 'Pilas en Corto', 'Actual' Logroño, 'Semana internacional del cortometraje' Logroño, 'Festival internacional Valle del Bravo' México, 'Premios Academia Gallega de Cine', 'Premios ACE', 'Semana internacional del cortometraje de San Roque', 'Festival internacional de Bueu'…). During that period, he also collaborated as assistant director in “De bares”, “Relatos” and “Madres” by Mario Iglesias.

In 2009, he started the production of his first film, “O Apóstolo”, which was the first European film in stereoscopic stop-motion. For this project he got the collaboration of experts of the best world productions with this technique and the musician Philip Glass.

That same year, ‘Variety’ included him in the list of the ten most innovative Spanish directors.

With 'O Apóstolo' he started his international career in the International Cinema Festival of Moscow in June 2012 and in the Spanish Cinema Festival of Malaga. He also run in the International Fantastic Cinema Festival of Sitges and was awarded the first prize at Expotoons Festival in Buenos Aires, which is the most important animation festival in Latin America. He was also awarded the Grand Prix of Cinehorizontes Festival in Marseille.

He is nominee to the Goya Awards for the best animation film.
