He took a doctor's degree in Medieval History at the Complutense University of Madrid (1984) and worked as a Professor of Paleography and Diplomatics at the UCM. In 1988, he entered the Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and was appointed to 'Milá y Fontanals' Institution (Barcelona) and afterwards to the Institute of History (Madrid). In 1994, he joined 'Padre Sarmiento' Institute of Galician Studies (Santiago de Compostela), promoting eventually to scientific researcher (2002) and research Professor (2008).
Since 1994 he has been directing this centre, where he coordinates the History and Heritage research group. This group was distingues as excellence group by the Xunta de Galicia in 2002.
Since February 2012 he has been institutional coordinator of the CSIC in Galicia.

 Work & Activities

He has been the main researcher of about twenty competitive projects and research contracts. Nowadays, he directs "Linaje, parentela y poder: la pirámide nobiliaria gallega al fin de la Edad Media" (Ministery of Economy and Competitiveness), "Mujeres con poder al final de la Edad Media. El testamento, la muerte y la memoria" (Xunta de Galicia), "Corpus de epigrafía, heráldica y escultura funeraria medieval gallega" (IEGPS-XUGA) and "Diccionario biográfico de la Galicia de los Trastámara" (Barrié Foundation). He also coordinates the Spanish group associated to the European project "CUIUS REGIO. An analysis of the cohesive and disruptive forces destining the attachment of groups of persons to and the cohesion within regions as a historical phenomenon" (European Science Foundation).
He is the author of about two hundred articles and over a dozen books: "Manual de Heráldica Española" (1987, Aldaba Ediciones and 2000, Edimat), "Don Pedro Fernández de Castro, VII Conde de Lemos (1996, Xunta de Galicia) ,"Palos, fajas y jaqueles. La fusión de armerías en Galicia en los siglos XIII al XVI (1997, Lugo County Council), "Los señores de Galicia" (2000, Barrié Foundation", "Don Pedro Álvarez Osorio. Un noble berciano del siglo XV" (2008, Pedro Álvarez Osorio Foundation and "De linajes, parentelas y grupos de poder. Aportaciones a la historia social de la nobleza bajomedieval gallega" (2012, Cultural Foundation of the Spanish Nobility).
His research lines focus on the fiel of History of the Middle Ages, mainly between the 13th and 14th centuries, paying a specific attention to the social history of power (political and social history of the powerful groups in Galicia). He also develops studies on Medieval Geneaology and Heraldics.

 Other Interesting Aspects

He was editor of 'Cuadernos de Estudios Gallegos' and two bibliographical series ('Anejos' and 'Monografías') as well as 'Galicia Histórica' Collection of Barrié Foundation.
He is vicepresident of the Spanish Committee of Historical Sciences and the latin American Confederation of Geneaology and Heraldics. He is a member of the Council of Galician Culture and several advisory commissions of the Galician autonomic administrations. He is vicepresident and advisor of the Heraldics Commission of the Xunta de Galicia.

He is a member of the Royal Academy of Heraldics and Geneaology, the Academie Internationale de Généalogie and the Academie Internationale d'Héraldique. He is a honourable member of over twenty institutes in Spain and European and American academies.
