He is an unquestionable reference of Galician sport. As a football player, he played twelve seasons in the first division of Spanish football and retired in 1965.

He also trained several clubs and played an important role in the promotion of Deportivo Club to the first division during the season 1990-91. The club also classified for the first time to play an European competition, the Uefa Cup, and won the first official title in the history of this club, the King Cup.

In addition to his activity as a football player and trainer, Arsenio Iglesias is a popular person for his idiosyncrasy and his way of understanding life.

He was honoured with Castelao Medal in 2012.
