He studied his ecclesiastical career at the Seminary in Ourense and the Pontifical University in Salamanca. Some years later, he studied Philosophy and Arts at Valladolid University, taking his doctor's degree in History in 1975. He was a Professor at Valladolid, Alicante, Oviedo and Deusto Universities. Nowadays, he teaches Old History at Santiago University.
He has written more than 16 monographs on topics of his speciality and over a hundred articles in scientific magazines. He has carried out archaeological excavations in Lugo, Chaves, in the 'Aquis Querquernis' Roman camp and other sites.
He is the author of a dozen investigation projects and director of 'Larouco' Archaeological Group and its magazine. He is a member of several national and foreign associations such as the Academy of History. He is married and has two children.
In November 2005, he became a member of the Galician Academy of Fine Arts.
