He studied Pharmacy and Medicine at Santiago de Compostela University and then improved his studies at Madrid University, studying Sciences and Philosophy and Arts at the same time. In 1945, he entered Santiago University as a Professor of General Chemistry and was the rector of this University since 1870. He was the editor of the magazine 'Revista Médica'. Antonio Casares devoted himself mainly to Chemistry. In his laboratory, he analysed several mineral waters in Spain.

These are some of his most important works: Memoria sobre la utilidad del uso de las fumigaciones cloruradas como preservativas del cólera-morbo, apoyadas en razones químico-médicas (Lugo, 1834), Análisis de las aguas minerales descubiertas en la isla de Loujo o Toja Grande (Santiago, 1843), Observaciones analíticas sobre las aguas de las fuentes de Santiago (Santiago, 1847), Tratado de Química General, con aplicaciones a la Industria y a la Agricultura (Madrid, 1848, 1857, 1867, 1880), Programa de Química General (Santiago, 1851); Análisis de las aguas minerales de Lugo (Lugo, 1853), Análisis de las aguas minerales de Sousas y Caldeliñas, del valle de Verín (Santiago, 1854 and 1859), Reconocimiento y análisis de unas aguas minerales recientemente descubiertas en Carballo (Santiago, 1862) and Análisis de las aguas ferruginosas de Incio (Santiago, 1864).
