In 1797, he was nominated dean of Santiago, filling this office until his death. As president and representative member of the Chapter, he refused to pay the tax imposed by the French general after the French invasion in Spain. Besides, owing to the opposition of the Chapter to the liberal party that was in power, he was taken to prison and banished to the Canary Islands in 1821.

He held the Order of Carlos III Knighthood.
