He took a degree in Hispanic Philology at Santiago de Compostela University in 1980 and a doctor’s degree in 1987 with the thesis ‘Valores de las formas verbales en castellano’. In 1994, he moved to Lugo and founded the magazine ‘Moenia. Revista Lucense de Lingüística e Literatura’ in the Faculty of Humanities, (he edits the magazine together with Claudio Rodríguez Fer). Nowadays, he works as a Professor of Spanish Language in the Faculty of Humanities (Lugo), where he was dean from 2003 to 2011. His research works focus on Phonology and verbal Morphosyntax, paying a special attention to Spanish and Galician both in their synchronic and diachronic dimensions. He also works in the study and reconstruction of medieval Spanish texts. In 2008, he was distinguished as Doctor Honoris Causa at the New Bulgarian University in Sofia.

 Work & Activities

He published the following books: ‘Condicionales, concesivas y modo verbal en español’ (Santiago de Compostela, 1992), ‘La forma verbal española ‘cantara’ en su diacronía’ (Santiago de Compostela, 1996), ‘Estudios de morfosintaxis verbal española’ (Lugo, 2002), ‘El subsistema vocálico español’ (Santiago de Compostela, 2002), ‘El modo verbal en cláusulas condicionales, causales, consecutivas, concesivas, finales y adverbiales de lugar, tiempo y modo’ (Salamanca, 2006, in collaboration with M. Mosteiro Louzao), ‘Co-pretérito e irreal / imperfecto o inactual’ (Lugo, 2008) and “El componente fónico de la lengua” (Lugo, 2009). He also collaborated in ‘Gramática descriptiva de la lengua española’ (1999), directed by I. Bosque and V. Demonte and in 'Sintaxis histórica de la lengua española' (2006), directed by C. Company (UNAM, Mexico). He is the founder and co-editor of 'Moenia. Revista Lucense de Lingüística e Literatura' (USC), scientific responsible for Axac publishing house and director of several book collections about Linguistics. He is also a member of the scientific committee of several magazines about Linguistics and Philology.

 Other Interesting Aspects

He organized two international conferences on linguistics: ‘Léxico y Gramática’ (Lugo, 2000) and “31º Congreso Internacional de Lingüística Funcional” (Lugo, 2007). He also organized several symposia, seminars and lectures in the Faculty of Humanities (Lugo). Besides, he worked as a lecturer and visiting professor in several Spanish and foreign universities. He also composed some works for Spanish guitar.
