He is a Professor of Philosophy and Educational Sciences and teaches Permanent Education, Education for Adults and Theory of Education. He gave several doctoral courses in the department of Theory and History of Education and other Universities in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. He was invited to take part in masters and higher degrees at several Universities of France and Portugal. He directed the department of Systematic Pedagogy (1984-86) and was the president of the Pedagogy section (1987-1993). Since 1997, he has been directing the department of Theory and History of Education. He has been on the senate and several commissions (culture and study programmes) on several occasions. He was a foundation member and president (1990-2000) of 'Grupo 90' research group. He also coordinated European programmes (Erasmus-Tempus) and other Latin American ones (Intercampus).

He published the following books: Sociopsicoanálisis y Educación (1984); Educación e Sociedade en Ourense (coord.) (1985); Educación de adultos nunha sociedade en transformación (coord.) (1994); Política de Educación de adultos (coord.) (1994); Alfabetización funcional en Galicia (coord.) (1997) and Educación permanente y Educación de adultos (2002). He also published several chapters on collective books and articles in national and international magazines.

He is a member of the Galician School Council representing Santiago de Compostela University and is on the editorial staff of the magazine 'Revista Interuniversitaria de Teoría da Educación'.
