He studied Romance Philology at the University of Santiago de Compostela. After staying as a Spanish assistant at University of Cologne (Germany), he returned to the University of Santiago de Compostela, where he is a Professor of the Galician Philology Department. Nowadays, he directs the Galician Philology Department of the University of Santiago de Compostela.

In March 2011 he was elected member of the Royal Galician Academy.

 Work & Activities

He published several works on Galician linguistics, mainly about phonetics, historiography and sociolinguistics: ‘Gramática galega’ (in collaboration with other authors, Vigo, 1986), ‘Guía bibliográfica de lingüística galega’ (Vigo, 1996) and ‘Os sons da lingua’ (Vigo, 1998) and different articles in specialized magazines and collective books.

 Other Interesting Aspects

He has been a researcher of the Galician Language Institute since 1981. He is also a member of the Galician Academy and coordinates ‘Cadernos de Lingua’, a magazine published by this institution since it was founded in 1990.
