He started his military career in Infantry and then changed into Artillery. In 1757, he definitively joined the Navy. He was appointed to the Academy of Midshipmen in Cádiz and was nominated as director of the academy in 1768. During the period 1783-88 he carried out the cartographic survey of the Spanish coast.

These are his most important works about Galicia: Plano de la ría de Corcubión desde la punta de Caldebarcos hasta el cabo de Finisterre (1786), Plano de la ría de Pontevedra con las islas Ons y Onza (1786), Plano de la ría de Vigo (1787), Plano de las rías del Barquero, Cedeira, Vivero y Ribadeo (1787-88), Plano de la ría y puerto de Ferrol (1789) and Carta esférica de la costa de Galicia (1789). His work was the basis for further cartographic surveys of the Galician coast in the late 18th century and the early 19th century.
