Roberto Varela Fariñas

He took a degree in Philosophy at the University of Barcelona and in International Relations at the Ecole Internationale et des relations internacionales (ILERI) in Paris. He has been a diplomat since 1989.

 Work & Activities

1990: He entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as head of the area for the economic relations with Latin America, within the International Economic Relations Department.
1994: He was nominated as adviser of the Spanish Embassy in Bonn, responsible for the interior policy of Germany.
1999: He was the second head of the Spanish Embassy in Kuwait, responsible for political, consular and cultural matters.
2001: He was nominated as subdirector general for Cooperation and Cultural Promotion abroad within the Cultural and Scientific Relations Office.
2004: He was consul of Spain in New York, responsible for cultural matters, relations with North American universities and educative institutions, collaborations with artistic and cultural institutions (MoMA, Metropolitan Museum, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall), programmes for cultural promotion of the autonomous regions and elaboration of the cultural programme of the Consulate General of Spain in New York.
He was the responsible (Conselleiro) for Culture and Tourism in the Xunta de Galicia since March 2009 until January 2012.
