He arrived in America in 1781 to take part in the delimitation of the Spanish and Portuguese colonies of the 'Río de la Plata'. He was appointed to the Navigation School in Buenos Aires, where he taught Geometry. In 1806, after the first attack of the English to Buenos Aires, he was nominated as colonel of the Galician Legion in Santiago de Liniers, where he managed to defeat the Englishmen in September of the same year. Then he continued with his military career and elaborated the plans to build the wharf in Buenos Aires. In 1814, he elaborated a detailed topographical map of the city.
He was a great expert in the indigenous languages that were spoken near the capital.
