He took a degree in Mathematics and a doctor’s degree in Fine Arts. He is a Professor of Photography in the Faculty of Fine Arts in Pontevedra and is responsible for the Photographic Research Group of the University of Vigo. Together with Xosé Luis Suárez Canal, he directs the Centre of Photographic Studies (http://www.cefvigo.com) and both of them are organizers of a lot of exhibitions and publishers of Álbum and Do Trinque Collections.
Since 1983 he has been carrying out individual exhibitions in Vigo (Museo do Mar, Ad Hoc, Barrié Foundation), A Coruña (Kiosco Alfonso, Barrié Foundation, Aquarium), Santiago (Pazo de Fonseca, Museo do Pobo Galego, Casa da Parra, C5, A Chocolatería), Braga (Encontros Internacionais da Imagen e Museo da Imagem), Coímbra (Centro de Estudos da Fotografía), Porto (Espaço Silo, organized by the Centro Potuguês de Fotografía), Newcastle (Side Gallery), Caracas (Sofía Imber Contemporary Art Museum), México D.F. (Museo Ciudad de México), Salvador de Baia (Conjunto Cultural da Caixa)…
His work was included in exhibitions like ‘Cuatro direcciones de la fotografiía contemporánea española’ (Reina Sofía Art Centre, Madrid, itinerant in Europe), Open Spain (The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, itinerant in Europe and USA), Quest for the Moon (The Museum of Fine Arts, Huston), Global Detail (Noorderlicht, Groningen, Holland), ‘Dende o Atlántico’ (Centre de la Photographie, Geneva - Switzerland), ‘Ausencias e memoria’ (Auditorium, Santiago de Compostela), ‘O futuro contemporáneo e Mapas, cosmogonías e puntos de referencia’ (CGAC, Santiago de Compostela) and ‘A balea negra’ (MARCO, Vigo). He was present in art fairs like Liste Köln (Cologne), Berliner Liste (Berlin); Bridge Art Fair (New York), Sh Contemporary (Shanghai) and ARCO (Madrid)
He wrote the following books: “Paisaxes” (1991), “Tempos que hai neste tempo” (1995), “Cuspindo a Barlovento” (2003), “Casas doentes” (2006) and “Derradeira sesión” (2009)
He is present in the collections of Reina Sofía Art Centre (Madrid), Encontros da Imagen (Braga, Portugal), Museo Marugame Iría (Japan), ‘Colección Fotográfica Comunidad de Madrid’, Contemporary Art Centre (Santiago de Compostela)
He published “Imaxes na penumbra. A fotografía afeccionada en Galicia, 1950-65” and together with X.L. Suárez Canal he wrote the monographs of Galician historic photographers: “Virxilio Viéitez”; “José Suárez”; “Ksado”; “Ramón Caamaño”; “Raniero Fernández”; “Luis Rueda”; “Arquivo J.M. Massó”; “Retratos da Costa da Morte. Ramón Caamaño”; “Arquivo Pacheco" (all of them in Álbum collection) and “A emigración de M. Ferrol, Pan”. Every monograph was accompanied by an exhibition. They directed the Photo biennial Exhibition in Vigo, (1984-2000, http://www.cefvigo.com/galego/expos_bienais_01.htm), Vigovisións project (1986-2000, http://www.cefvigo.com/galego/vv_principal.htm) Sala dos Peiraos (1985-1991,) and organized exhibitions like Madrid Mirada.
