He is married and has two daughters and has lived in Barcelona since the late 60’s. He is one of the authors of the new stage of the Spanish audiovisual industry and was awarded Castelao’s medal (Xunta de Galicia), one of the most important distinctions conferred by the Galician government. Filmax was created in 1953 as a distributor of the greatest successes of the North American cinematography. Since the premiere of ‘Moulin Rouge’ by John Huston, Filmax has distributed over eight hundred films in Spain. Nowadays, Filmax is one of the most important independent industrial organizations of the Spanish audiovisual sector, which focuses on creation, production, distribution and exhibition of fiction and animation contents. Julio Fernández created his own fantastic genre cinematographic mark, FANTASTIC FACTORY and in 1987, he acquired Filmax to use it in the new markets of video and television. After being restored as a distributor of international successes, it started its evolution as a full audiovisual industry. In 1999, Filmax started to produce audiovisual contents from Spain to the rest of the world. The creation of Fantastic Factory was well accepted in the international markets as well as the productions of Filmax Animation and recently those of Filmax TV. In 2001, Filmax inaugurated FILMAX GRANVÍA, a five-screen cinema for Granvía de L’Hospitalet Shopping Centre (Barcelona). Two years later, Filmax increased its capital with the following institutions: ICF (Generalitat de Cataluña), XES GALICIA (Xunta de Galicia), SEPIDES (Spanish Government) and the bank firms Caixa Laietana and Spinnaker (Grupo Riva e García), constituting FILMAX ENTERTAINMENT.
He is a member of the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences, vice-president of the Federation of Associations of Spanish Audiovisual Producers, managing director of the executive committee of EGEDA (Management Entity for the Rights of Audiovisual Producers), member of ESCAC Foundation (Barcelona University) and president of the Association of Galician Businessmen in Catalonia.
