He worked in the library of the Galician Academy since he was a child. He grew up surrounded by books and culture. From his ‘cultural father’, César Vaamonde Lores (historian and librarian of the Galician Academy), he acquired a wide humanistic education and was instructed in most various historical sciences: palaeography, epigraphy, heraldry, numismatics… He turned from disciple into his collaborator. He was also academician and librarian of the Galician Academy (1946-1993), official chronicler of A Coruña (1961-1993), member of Nuestra Señora del Rosario Fine Art Academy (1968) and secretary general (1976-1993) and section head of “La Voz de Galicia”.

Juan Naya gave lectures about art, Galician culture and history and published many articles and books: “Murguía y su obra poética” (A Coruña, 1950); “Inéditos de Rosalía de Castro” (Vigo, 1953); “Una obra desconocida del arquitecto Domingo Luis Monteagudo.
