When he was fourteen, he entered the Spanish Armada as midshipman and took part in the war between Spain and USA in 1898. Then he was raised to the rank of lieutenant, major and vice-admiral. In 1923, he was nominated as First Lord of the Admiralty, the following year he was promoted admiral and in October 1928 he was raised to the rank of chief of naval operations. On 18th July 1928, he took the oath as head of government before King Alfonso XIII. He filled this office until 1931.
He held the crosses of the Naval and Military Merit as well as San Hermenegildo's cross. He also got medals in the campaigns of Cuba and The Philippines and the badges of Gentleman of the French Legion.
