He took a degree in Philosophy and Arts (Section: Geography and History and Art History) at the University of Santiago de Compostela and a doctor’s degree in Modern and Contemporary Art History at the same university. He is a member of St Fernando Fine Art Academy.

He wrote about twenty books and over two hundred articles that were published in many research magazines.

José Manuel García Iglesias was the president of the IGAEM (Galician Institute of Scenic and Musical Arts) from 1993 and 1997. Regarding cultural organization, he was responsible for the following programmes: “Galicia no tempo” (1990-1991), “Galaecia Fulget” (1995-1996), “Galicia, Terra Única” (1997), Xacobeo 99 and Xacobeo 2004. Since November 2005, he has been directing the Social and Cultural Department of Caixa Galicia.
