He took a degree in Pharmacy at 'Complutense' University (Madrid, 1965) and his doctor's degree in 1969. From 1966 to 1978, he worked as an assistant lecturer at Leon University and 'Complutense' University in Madrid. As a Professor, he teaches Botany, Geobotany, Vegetal Ecology, Phytogeography and Phytosociology. He directed twelve doctoral thesis of his speciality, all of them related to Vegetal Ecology (UNESCO 2417, 250525403). He took part in thirty projects subsidised by several institutions. He is a member of the Spanish Society of Natural History, the Amicale de Phytosociologie (France), the Botanical Society of France, 'Sociedade Broteriana' (Portugal), the Spanish Association of Phytosociology, the European Union Dune Conservation (Holland), the International Association Vegetation Science (Sweden) and Optima (Berlin). He is the secretary of the Faculty of Biology ('Complutense' University in Madrid) and vice-dean in the Faculty of Pharmacy (Santiago de Compostela University).

 Work & Activities

He is the author of 120 works on different lines of botanical research and thirty books and articles. He has promoted the botanical nomenclature in Spain and is responsible for a specialised section in the magazine 'Lazaroa'. He carried out works on applied research in the valuation of continental and coastal flora and vegetation as well as environmental management and vegetation analysis. He wrote the books Madrid verde (Ministry of Agriculture), O Courel (Santiago de Compostela University), Pazos de Galicia, Jardines y Plantas (Xunta de Galicia) and Botánica (McGraw-Hill / Interamericana). He is the promoter of the Galician Botanical Garden and its delegate of Santiago University.

He got an extraordinary prize for his doctor's degree in 1969, the prize awarded by the Academy of Pharmacy (1971), 'Galicia' Prize (1982), the National Prize awarded by the Ministry of Agriculture (1983) and the prize awarded by the Galician Academy of Sciences (1986).
