Curriculum 1959: He started his ecclesiastic studies in the Seminary of Santiago de Compostela.
1972: Degree in Theology at the Gregorian Pontifical University of Rome.
1972-1973: He studied at the Pontifical Institute of Oriental Studies.
1974: He was ordained as a priest on 27th July 1974 by Mons. Ángel Suquía, archbishop of Santiago de Compostela, in Santa María de Bayo (A Coruña).
1978: Doctor’s degree at the Gregorian Pontifical University of Rome.
1978-1979: Chaplain of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza Hospital in Santiago de Compostela.
1981-1989: Director of the Theological Institute of Compostela.
1981-1997: Professor of Theology at the Theological Institute of Compostela.
1980-1990: Invited Professor at the Gregorian Pontifical University of Rome.
1984-1997: Director of the Centre of Jacobean Studies.
1987- 1997: Consultant of the Episcopal Committee for the Faith Doctrine.
1989- 1997: Professor in the Faculties of Philosophy and Philology at the University of Santiago de Compostela.
1991-1997: Rector of the Seminary (Santiago de Compostela).
1992: He directed retreat for the bishops of Angola.
1992-1994: He gave training courses for the priests of Angola.
1997: He was nominated as bishop of Turuda and auxiliary bishop of Madrid on 7th March.
On 1st May 1997, he was ordained as bishop by Mons. Antonio Mª Rouco Varela, archbishop of Madrid, at Santa María la Real de la Almudena Cathedral.
1997: Member of the Episcopal Committee for the Faith Doctrine.
1997-2002: Member of the Episcopal Committee for Seminaries and Universities.
1999: He was nominated as vice-chancellor of ‘San Dámaso’ Faculty of Theology (Madrid) on 1st September 1999.
1999-2002: Member of the Episcopal Committee for the Media.
1999-2002: President of the Episcopal Subcommittee of Universities.
2002: President of the Episcopal Committee for the Faith Doctrine.
2002: Member of the Standing Committee of the Synod of the Spanish bishops.
2005: He was nominated as vice-chancellor of the Pontifical University of Salamanca on 25th November 2005.
Work & Activities He has edited the magazine "Compostellanum" and the collection "Fuentes y estudios patrísticos", Ciudad Nueva (Madrid).
He was an invited Professor in the Faculty of Theology of the North of Spain in Burgos. Then, he was a Professor in ‘San Dámaso’ Faculty of Theology (Madrid).
He published a dozen books about his speciality and over a hundred research articles in scientific magazines. He also collaborated in over collective publications.
Other Interesting Aspects He was a member of the Royal Academy of Doctors.
He dedicated most of his time to retreat and pastoral service to the religious communities of Santiago. He also gave courses to the bishops of Mexico.
As auxiliary bishop of Madrid, he coordinated the Catechesis, Liturgy, Educative Pastoral, Missions… In 2005, he was also on the presidency committee of the Third Diocesan Synod.
