He studied Secondary School in Ourense and Biology at Madrid University. He met Luis Buñuel at the hall of the residence and together with him, he founded one of the first cinema-club in Spain. After taking his degree, he taught Biology at the Central University and took part in the Pedagogic Missions, sponsored by the 'Instituto Libre de Enseñanza'.

 Work & Activities

He made several documentaries such as La ciudad y el campo, Almadrabas, Castillos de Castilla, Felipe II y El Escorial, En un lugar de Castilla, Saudade, Galicia,... After the Civil War, he went to Mexico into exile and there he made the scripts for the feature films Entre hermanos, La barraca, Vértigo and La Selva de fuego These are some of his most important features films Torero, Chistelandia, Nueva Chistelandia, Vuelve Chistelandia, Pedro Páramo, Don Juan 67, Cinco de chocolate y uno de fresa, Secreto eterno, Alguien nos quiere matar,... He also made some shorts such as Un día en la radio, Pintura mural mexicana, Cine Verdad, El corazón de una ciudad, El medio pelo, Cartas del Japón, Universidad compartida, El mar y los hombres, Adiós a la República,... . As an actor, he took part in the film 2604 and in the documentary El pueblo maya.

 Other Interesting Aspects

In 1984, the 'Xunta de Galicia' granted him 'Mestre Mateo' Prize of Arts and was recalled at the Cinema Weeks in O Carballiño (1985).
