He took a degree in Medicine at the University of Santiago in 1978 and a doctor’s degree in 1982, after a predoctoral stay at the University of Uppsala. He was appointed to the Professorship of Legal Medicine of the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1989. He directed the Department of Pathologic Anatomy of the University of Santiago and since 1998 he has directed the Institute of Legal Medicine of the University of Santiago de Compostela. During the first stage of his professional career, he devoted himself to Forensic Genetics and Population Genetics, where he soon became internationally famous.
He promoted the creation of the Spanish and Portuguese Group of Forensic Genetics that he included in the International Society of Forensic Genetics. He has been on the board of directors of this society since 1989 and was the president from 1999 to 2003; nowadays, he is the vice president of this society.
In the late 80’s, he began to focus on Clinic Genetics, which concluded with the creation of the Public Foundation of Genomic Medicine, which he directs, dependent on the ‘Consejería de Sanidad’.
He also studied clinic genetics, cancer genetics and genetics of neuropsychiatric common diseases in his research activity, which made him achieve the most important office of the National Centre of Genotyping for Galicia, a research centre financed by "Genoma España", a foundation dependent on the Ministry of Health and Industry for the research on complex diseases and pharmogenetics.
In his career, he has published ten books and over three hundred research works in the most prestigious magazines.

 Work & Activities

He is the editor of “FSI: Genetics” and member of the editorial staff of more than fifteen international magazines about Legal Medicine and Genetics.
He is a member of many national and international commissions, gave lectures all over the world and directed 40 doctoral theses.
He was awarded many prizes, such as Castelao Medal, Galicia Silver Medal, Varela de Montes Medicine Research Prize, “Terra de Xallas” Gold Medal and the distinction of ‘honorary citizen’ of Santa Comba. He was also awarded a lot of prizes in scientific societies all over the world.
He is also the vice president of the International Academy of Legal Medicine and honourable member of many societies of Legal Medicine and Genetics all over the world. Nowadays, he is the president of the Spanish Society of Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics.
