He is the author of about two hundred scientific articles published in scientific magazines and several books.
He has been a researcher responsible for national and European projects and has directed over ten doctoral theses.
He is responsible for the National Reference Laboratory for diseases of bivalve molluscs and was awarded a prize by the Galician Academy of Sciences – Caixa Galicia Foundation and the Advisory Board of Marine Cultures.
He collaborates with the European Union as an advisor in Pathology of Aquaculture Organisms.
He directed the Institute of Marine Research from 2001 to 2005.
Nowadays he coordinates Aquagenomics Project (Consolider-Ingenio 2010) for the development of biotechnological tools in the improvement of aquaculture production and works in the immune response of fish and bivalve molluscs.
