After studying Secondary Education in Monforte, he studied Medicine in Santiago de Compostela (1965-71), taking an extraordinary prize for his degree. In 1974, he specialised in Paediatrics and in Neurology in 1981. He began to work as an assistant doctor in the Paediatrics Department at the University Hospital in Santiago de Compostela and became the head of the Paediatrics Service in 1979. Since 1982, he has been the head of the Service of Unweaned Babies Nowadays, he is a Professor of Paediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine at Santiago University. After taking his degree, he got several scholarships from the Research Fund of the Social Security and Xunta de Galicia. He is a member of twenty-three scientific and medical societies such as the European Paediatric Neurology Society, the International Child Neurology Association, the European Society for Developmental Pharmacology...). He filled the offices of secretary and vice-president of paediatric specialities in the Galician Society of Paediatrics. He is a member of the Galician Academy of Medicine and Surgery, honourable member of the Galician Society of Paediatrics and the Spanish Association of Paediatrics. He is also on the editorial staff of several scientific magazines.

 Work & Activities

In addition to his research works, he directed directed twenty-five minor thesis and ten doctoral thesis. He collaborated with many chapters in forty national and international books about Paediatrics and Paediatric Neurology. He wrote the book Tratamiento de las enfermedades neurológicas en niños y adolescentes (Espasa, Barcelona, 1999). He gave many lectures in Spain and abroad (USA, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, Portugal...) and took part in 630 scientific papers, reports and round tables, in many conferences and national and international scientific meetings. He wrote about three hundred scientific articles for national and international magazines.

 Other Interesting Aspects

For his research activity, he was awarded many prizes such as the prize awarded by the Galician Academy of Medicine and Surgery for his research work Bocio endémico en niños y adolescentes de Galicia: estudio epidemiológico, antropométrico, bioquímico y psicométrico; the National Prize of Paediatrics for his research work Estudio de los metabolitos de los nucleótidos purínicos en el LCR de niños con hidrocefalia, meningitis, sepsis y convulsiones febriles and 'Marcos Ortega Mera' Prize for his research work Distrofia muscular tipo Duchenne. Estudio de las alteraciones del metabolismo purínico y sus implicaciones patogénicas.
