After finishing his ecclesiastical studies in the Seminary of Mondoñedo, he devoted himself to journalism and literature. He was editor-in-chief of the magazine ‘Acción Social’, editor of the weekly magazines ‘Justicia’ and ‘Renovación’ and founder of the weekly magazine ‘Vallibria’ in Mondoñedo. He also edited La Voz de la Verdad and El Progreso in Lugo, filling this office until he retired in 1972. He also edited the Bulletin of the City Council of Lugo, El Heraldo de Vivero and the magazine ‘Lucus’.
José Trapero wrote many articles and the following books: El Mariscal Don Pedro Pardo de Cela. Leyenda acerca de su prisión y muerte (1925), Lostregos e moxenas (1926), La venganza de Salgado (1931), A ponte do Porco. Lexenda tráxica (1931), Non chores Sabeliña (1943), Pintura mural de Galicia (1978), Cien años de vida local (1978), Lugo y poblaciones próximas. Itinerarios turísticos (1978), Lugo: Antiguas fortalezas (1980), Vida e obra de Leiras Pulpeiro (1983), ...E Peludez dixo (1984).
José Trapero Pardo was the official chronicler of Lugo, member of San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts and member of the Galician Academy. Besides, he directed the Provincial Museum and was the president of the association ‘Amigos de los Castillos’, as well as member of several patronages.
