José Ramón Gómez Besteiro

He took a degree in Law at the University of Santiago de Compostela. He always wanted to join the Socialist Party, so he has been a member of this political group since the 90's. He is on the national committee of the PSOE, on the Galician Socialist executive committee and he has also been general secretary of the local PSdeG-PSOE in Lugo since 2000. On 14th July 2007, he was elected president of Lugo County Council, becoming he third president of the democratic stage and number102 in the history of Lugo County Council. Before being the president, he had already been in this institution as a socialist deputy since 1999 up to 2007. He was also the spokesman of the governing team in Lugo City Council and councillor responsible for town planning from 1999 up to 2007.
José Ramón Gómez Besteiro ratified his post as president of Lugo Councy Council and started his second term of office after the local elections celebrated on 22nd May 2011. Stopping demographic depopulation in Lugo (one of the most underpopulated provinces in Spain) by promoting employment, environmental economy and new technologies are the strategic lines of his government in coalition with the BNG.
Since he arrived at Lugo County Council, he opened the institution and reorientated the provincial policies towards useful projects for citizens like the opnening of a fire station network in the province, the creation of the first public centre for cattle breeding at Gayoso Castro farm, the Open University, the payment of a millionary debt with numerous city councils for the hydroelectric tax, the complete transference of hospitals to the Xunta de Galicia, the creation of a residential home network with day centres, etc.
