He studied Secondary Education in Ourense, where he founded and edited the magazine 'Posío', which has recently been published by the Xunta de Galicia. He was a follower of Vicente Risco. He studied Arts in Santiago and finished his career in Madrid in 1946. He took a doctor's degree in Romance Philology at 'Complutense' University (Madrid, 1948). He took a doctor's degree at Cologne University (Germany, 1956) and was conferred the title of 'doctor honoris causa' at the South National University (Argentina, 1997). Since 1989, he has been emeritus professor at Complutense University (Madrid) and professor on active service at Texas University since 1990. He worked as a Spanish conversation assistant at Cologne University and was general secretary of the Spanish Institute in Munich (1956 and 1957) and Professor of Spanish Literature at La Laguna, Valladolid and Madrid Universities. He filled the offices of dean in the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts (La Laguna University) and the Faculty of Information Sciences (Madrid University), general secretary of the International University of the Canary Islands (Las Palmas) and vice-rector of 'Complutense' University (Madrid). He was also 'Gastprofessor' at Cologne, Innsbruck and Salzburg Universities and 'visiting professor' in California, Virginia and Texas.

 Work & Activities

His activity as literary critic focusses mainly on Spanish modern literature, literature written in Galician and Spanish-German literary relations. He wrote more than 150 books such as Poesía y Restauración Cultural de Galicia (Madrid, Gredos, 1958); La palabra y la llama (Madrid, 1968); La transfiguración literaria (Madrid, 1970); Larra y España (Madrid, 1983); Tradición e Innovación en Cunqueiro (Santiago, 1991); Cervantes, Vossler y la ciencia literaria, etc.

 Other Interesting Aspects

He was honourable guest of the Galician Centre in Buenos Aires for the Galician Conferences (July, 1968). He got 'Miguel de Unamuno' National Literature Prize (1970) and was awarded the Cross to the Civil Merit and the Galician Medal.
