He studied Law at Santiago University and travelled to France, Belgium and Holland. Then he established himself in his native town, where he worked in a bank until his death. Gonzalo López Abente took part in all cultural and political movements in Galicia. He also collaborated in newspapers and magazines such as El Noroeste, Nós, Rexurdimento, Ronsel and A Nosa Terra. Since 1925 he took part at the Seminary of Galician Studies.

 Work & Activities

As a poet he first published Escumas da Ribeira y Alento da raza, where he described Galician landscapes and his soul intimately joined to him. In 1924, he published D'outono and Nemancos in 1929. The theme of the sea is present in all the poems of the last poetry book he wrote in life: Centíleos nas ondas (1958). After his death, other two poetry books were published: Decrúa (1966) and Monza de frores bravas para Nosa Señora da Barca (1971). As far as narrative is concerned, he started in 1919 with O diputado por Veiramar and continued with O escándalo (1920), O novo xuez (1922), Buserana (1925), Fuxidos (1926) and Vaosilveiro (1929). All these novels reflect the theme of love. He also contributed to the theatre with a play about love titled María Rosa, which was performed for the first time in 1921 and published in 1928.

The Galician Academy dedicated him ?O Día das Letras Galegas? (The Day of the Galcian Letters) in 1971.
