He studied Medicine in Valencia. In 1963, he took his doctor's degree and presented the thesis 'Estudio de la hemodinámica cerebral en los estados depresivos', which was directed by Professor J. J. Barcia Goyanes. He specialised in Psychiatry and Neurology. He was an assistant lecturer of Psychiatry in Valencia (1995), Psychiatry Professor in Santiago de Compostela (1972-75), Psychiatry Professor in Murcia (1975 -), Director of 'Román Alberca' Psychiatric Hospital in Murcia (1975-1980) and head of the Psychiatry Service at the University General Hospital in Murcia (1980-). ACADEMIES: He is a member of the Academy of Medicine in Murcia, Academy of Sciences of New York, the 'Académie de Sciences et Belle Lettres' of Toulousse, the Académie Europeen des Sciences, Arts et de Lettres in Paris and the Academy of Medicine in Madrid. INTERNATIONAL SOCIETIES (restricted members): He is Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine of London and the International Federation of Psychoanalysis. He is also a member of the 'Medical Societé Psychologique' in Paris, the 'Societé de Histoire de la Psychiatrie et de Psychoanálsis' in Paris, the 'Societé L'Encephale' in Paris, the 'Societe Philosophique' in Toulousse and honourable member of the Argentinean Psychiatry Society, the Cordoba Psychiatry Society (Argentina) and the Panamanian Psychiatry Society. NATIONAL SOCIETIES: He is the president of the Spanish Psychiatry Society, the Society for the Progress of Psychiatry, the Spanish Psychogeriatrics Society and the Group for the Study on Depressión. He is an honourable of the Galician Psychiatry Society, the Andalusian Psychiatry Society, the Levantine Geriatrics Society and the Murcian Neurology Society.

 Work & Activities

He directed a Psychiatry Treaty in three volumes, with C. Ruiz Ogara and JJ López Albor and another one in two volumes. He has written 430 articles about Psychiatry in national and international magazines and collaborated as rapporteur in 91 national and international conferences. He has also directed 35 doctoral thesis and organised many national meetings and conferences. He got the 'Alonso Allende' and 'Sanchís Banus' Psychiatry Prizes.
