He took a degree in Law and Information Sciences and a doctor’s degree with a research work about Spanish literary press, published in three volumes. He was a Professor of Literary Theory and Critic at the Complutense University. In the last eight years, he has taught Humanities and Journalism at Carlos III University and coordinated courses on Humanities at the Summer University of El Escorial. From 1985 to 1996, he worked for ‘Cambio 16’ and ‘Diario 16’, being assistant editor and responsible for the cultural pages and the supplements related to culture and books. In 1996, he joined the Fine Arts Circle as managing director. From 2004 to 2007, he directed Cervantes Institute. In July 2007, he was elected minister of Culture.

He has published thirty books, mainly essay, prose and poetry. His poetry was collected in many anthologies and was translated into several languages. ‘El rumor del tiempo’ is his last book, a poetic anthology of his whole work published by Círculo de Lectores.
