He took his degree in Philosophy and Arts (Romance Philology) at Santiago University and his doctor's degree at Oviedo University. He was a Professor at the University Colleges of Lugo (1973-78) and Vigo (1978-81). Since 1981 up to now, he has been a Professor at Santiago University, teaching Galician and Portuguese Philology.

In 1982, he got the International Research Prize for his book Lectura semiológica de Fortunata y Jacinta.
