He studied Medicine and Philosophy and Arts at Santiago de Compostela University, but he never practise any of them because since he was young he devoted himself to journalism and politics. He was the editor-in-chief of the newspaper El Diario de Santiago when the cantonal revolt took place in Ferrol in 1972. In 1878, he became the editor of this newspaper, which was later called Gaceta de Galicia. In 1880, he left Galicia to work in Madrid. Then he edited El Globo and then El Liberal since 1907 until his death.
In 1875, he began to write A orillas del Ulla in Santiago that was published in the newspaper El Heraldo Gallego, edited by his friend Valentín Lamas Carvajal. He also wrote literary works such as Recuerdos 1868-1873 (Ourense, 1876) and Dioses menores: A orillas del Ulla (Perfiles gallegos) (1875-1881).
In 1910, he participated in agrarian meetings in Galicia and was a republican-agrarian candidate to Parliament, representing Becerreá (Lugo).
